Synergy Marine (M) Sdn Bhd Partners with MTCMS Design and Shin Yang Shipyards to Build RM188.75 Million LNG and Diesel Platform Support Vessel — Shipbuilding Sector
Kuala Lumpur — Synergy Marine (M) Sdn Bhd has partnered with MTCMS Design Sdn Bhd and Shin Yang Shipyards Sdn Bhd to build a liquefied natural gas (LNG) and diesel platform supply vessel costing RM188.75 million, marking a significant milestone for Malaysia's shipbuilding sector and the nation's commitment to greener maritime technology.
Synergy Marine Managing Director Datuk Roslan Ahmad announced that the shipbuilding project will start in January next year and is expected to be completed by December 2020. He further stated that Synergy Marine will invest in research and development of ship designs using three-dimensional technologies, including digital twin technology, equipped with virtual reality technology for maintenance, emergency and training exercises — reinforcing the company's commitment to deploying cutting-edge innovation throughout the vessel's lifecycle.
The LNG generating engine system is believed to substantially reduce the release of sulphur dioxide, nitrogen dioxide and carbon dioxide, making it significantly more environmentally friendly than the vessels currently in use. Datuk Roslan made these remarks at the signing of a memorandum of understanding between Synergy Marine, MTCMS Design and Shin Yang Shipyards, held in Kuala Lumpur yesterday.
Also present at the MoU signing ceremony were MTCMS Design Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer Abdul Razak Ismail, and Shin Yang Shipyards Chief Executive Officer Captain Ting Hien Liong. The vessel will have a width of 19 metres, a length of 76.8 metres and a deck capacity of 600 square metres, and will be built to offer services to oil and gas companies operating across the global market.
Commenting on the current state of the industry, Datuk Roslan noted that since the economic downturn and the decline in oil prices in 2016, most of the global oil and gas companies are restarting their exploration and production campaigns. He described this as a positive indicator showing that the marine and shipping industry will start to pick up again — making the present an opportune moment to invest in a modern, environmentally compliant offshore support vessel.
"For the time being, we are building only one LNG generating platform supply vessel, but some companies in West Asia have shown interest in our previous project. Therefore, we are ready to build another platform supply vessel if there was a demand from them from countries in West Asia," he said, underscoring both the strong international appetite for green maritime solutions and Synergy Marine's readiness to expand its LNG-powered fleet in response to global demand.
